Rivet Nut Hole Size Chart | Sherex by PEM Recommended Diameters
Rivet Nut Hole Size Chart
Correct hole size is one of the most important factors in achieving reliable rivet nut performance. An undersized hole prevents correct installation; an oversized hole reduces grip and pull-out strength. This reference guide from Sherex® by PEM® provides recommended hole diameters for the key rivet nut body styles across the product range.
Why Hole Size Matters
During installation, the rivet nut body expands behind the sheet material to create the mechanical interlock that holds it in place. The hole must be sized correctly to allow the body to collapse properly and create the correct bulge geometry. Too small and the tool cannot set the rivet nut; too large and the bulge cannot grip the material effectively, reducing pull-out resistance.
Recommended Hole Sizes – Round Body Rivet Nuts
The following recommended hole diameters apply to standard round body rivet nuts in the Sherex by PEM range. Tolerances shown are for standard production drilling or punching. Always confirm specifications from the individual product data sheet.
- M3 thread: Recommended hole diameter 5.1 mm (±0.1 mm)
- M4 thread: Recommended hole diameter 6.1 mm (±0.1 mm)
- M5 thread: Recommended hole diameter 7.1 mm (±0.1 mm)
- M6 thread: Recommended hole diameter 9.1 mm (±0.1 mm)
- M8 thread: Recommended hole diameter 11.1 mm (±0.1 mm)
- M10 thread: Recommended hole diameter 13.1 mm (±0.1 mm)
- M12 thread: Recommended hole diameter 16.1 mm (±0.1 mm)

Full Hex and Half Hex Body Types

Full hex and half hex rivet nuts require a correspondingly shaped hole produced by a suitable punch. The hex across-flats dimension of the hole must match the body specification. Contact the Sherex by PEM technical team or refer to individual product data sheets for exact hex hole dimensions.

Special Body Types
Slotted body, countersunk, Optisert®, and RIV-FLOAT® products may have different hole size requirements from standard round body rivet nuts. Always refer to the specific product data sheet or contact the Sherex by PEM technical team before committing hole size dimensions for these product families.
