PEM® Fastening Technology for Repeatable, Consistent Electrical Joints

eMobility, which we define as the shift from internal combustion engines (ICEs) to electric vehicles (EVs), is revolutionizing the automotive industry like never before. What was once a domain led by mechanical engineers now increasingly relies on electrical engineering expertise, as vehicles evolve into intelligent, data-driven machines.

Modern Electrical Architecture

OEM’s have taken the opportunity to re-imagine the vehicles electrical architecture right down to how electricity is moved throughout the vehicle. Traditional cables are being replaced with busbars offering significant advantages:

  • Enhanced Assembly and Manufacturing Efficiency
  • Improved Reliability and Durability
  • Efficient Power Distribution
  • Thermal Management
  • Space Optimization
  • Reduced Electrical Losses
  • Support for Higher Voltages

Suppliers are now challenged with how to connect these busbars efficiently and effectively, both mechanically and electrically. PEM eConnect® fastening technology provides repeatable, consistent electrical joints and superior installation in applications that demand superior performance. Along with PEM® mechanically attached fasteners the complete connection can be achieved from a single source.

Many products in the PEM eMobility portfolio of fasteners enable reliable electrical connections between copper or aluminum busbars, PCBs or cable terminals. The PEM eMobility portfolio includes the ECCB™ Contact Bushing, EPCRB™ Pin, ReelFast® Surface Mount Fasteners, CK™ CastSert® Press-in Inserts, Blind B™ Nuts, SFN™ Spinning Flare Nuts, S™ Self Clinching Nuts, Roller Bearing Fasteners, MRF™ Ghost™ Magnetic Release Fasteners and more.

Lightweighting

Lightweighting

As eMobility advances, reducing vehicle weight has become crucial for enhancing efficiency, performance, and sustainability. In EVs, it directly boosts range and allows for smaller, cost-effective batteries, reducing energy use and the environmental impact of resource-intensive battery production. OEMs seek to integrate components that are lighter but will not compromise performance. Traditionally, copper has been the material of choice for EV busbars due to its excellent conductivity, but aluminum is emerging as a compelling alternative.

Ingress Protection

Ingress Protection

Connections within Electric Vehicles are particularly susceptible to moisture and vibration. Ensuring the integrity of battery trays and other components on EV's is paramount to their success. Our mechanical IP-rated (IPX9K) fastening solutions can be deployed even in non-standardized designs or when space is at a premium. Without any sealants, the eConnect portfolio offers metal-on-metal solutions for your application. PEM® fasteners are rigorously tested and meet IPx9K and IPX7/8 ratings.

Conductivity

Conductivity / Energy Efficiency

The future of Connections: Reducing friction and therefore energy loss is the goal for Internal Combustion Engines. For an EV, the goal is to reduce Electrical Resistance.

The ECCB™ eConnect® Contact Bushing is designed to minimize electrical resistance at connection points. It uses a high surface area knurl design to pierce the oxide layer on busbars and provides ultra-low resistance in the electrical connection, allowing current to flow with minimal energy loss. The fastener eliminates the need for the busbar ends to be plated and acts as a mechanical and electrical connection in one solution and installation.

Cutting Electrical Resistance
Durability

Durability

Our mechanically attached fasteners (MAF) have greater reliability and more joining force than traditional options, achieving stronger attachment, even in the thinnest panels where high torque out resistance is required. The cold forming process enhances metallurgical properties and structural integrity, optimizing strength and durability. Fasteners must withstand high tolerance and vibration demands (USCAR2 and LV214), carrying loads between 65-90% of their yield strength to prevent loosening or failure during installation and use. PEM® Automotive fasteners are designed and manufactured to ensure exceptional safety and reliability for electric vehicles, supporting the integrity of the vehicle’s core structure.
